Meet Our One-Liner Judges

Joan Liman

Most of my friends marvel at my energy because I juggle so many roles - wife, mother, full-time employee, part-time student, theater impresario and networker supreme. As director of the Carole Hyatt Leadership Forum, a women’s networking group, I have been privileged to meet extraordinary, like-minded women who multitask their way through life, many of whom have introduced me to new pastimes and pursuits. I know I am not onlyliving in the fast lane but doing 80 m.p.h. because my husband begins every Monday with the plaintive query, “So, are there any nights this week when you will be coming home to make
I think I am living in the fast lane because I have two teenagers, 1 husband, 1 dog and a full time job as an Admin Manager at a school. I am constantly running or driving from one thing to another to get kids where they need to be whilst balancing 5 other things at the same time. I also manage to fit in some time for myself whilst being a great daughter to my widowed mother and sister to my siblings. I also try to be the best friend I can to my many girlfriends.

Karen, I’m very glad that you are heading for successful book #2!
I’ve been divorced for about seven years now. My ex works for a large magazine conglomerate. I see my two boys every other weekend - I tell my friends it’s a bi-coastal relationship since I live about sixty miles to the west in Morristown, NJ, and my ex lives in Westchester County - the Hudson River divides my coasts! While married as well as now, I’ve always lived in the fast lane and I had a wife in the fast lane as well.

On my weekends, it’s a very long journey to juggle soccer, baseball, and tennis, not to mention trying to enjoy a nice home on Long Beach Island. The boys jokingly call their life on the road, “four homes” - Westchester, Morristown, LBI, and the Catskills. It’s a nice life if you’re not paying gas. Thank heaven for cars that exceed 100,000 miles these days. So much so, I left my 23 year career at a large travel management company and joined a Rent-a-car company.

I WAS living in the fast lane for more years than I care to mention. I decided to slow down, enjoy life and possibly create a living without watching the clock. I worked as Director of Sales & Marketing in the hospitality industry for 20 years and couldn’t catch up on work or on my personal desires. I KNOW how the fast lane can drive you to a one-way lane of insanity.

I am a management consultant, travel writer and occasional author, based in the UK but love my (sadly) infrequent trips to Manhattan. My favourite women are Ivy Ames & Sarah Jessica Parker. My Life in the Fast Lane? - trying to juggle simultaneous work projects in the UK, Ireland & Europe with spending time with my partner & stepchildren, and trying to get some work done on my novel. And trying not to get caught speeding in the fast lane on my (sadly) frequent tips to Southampton- the English port, not the swish holiday retreat…

As I divorced my second husband, I decided to investigate what made men tick. I set out to interview 527 men about how they really felt about women. I accomplished the interviews while running a business and being a single parent. Meanwhile back at the ranch: I lost all my pre-martial assets (a mysoginistic judge) to my short-term spouse. Stupidly, I STOOD in the fast lane…

Jeanne Guertin-Potoff

I lived many years in the fast lane. My daily/weekly lists left little space or time for building the relationships and memories that count. There were simply too many occasions when life was going by while I was doing ‘busy-ness’. Eventually, there was an accumulation of events that reached critical mass including illnesses and deaths. These were events that were so profound that they forced me to stop for a moment. Priorities are reevaluated again and again. Now, I am gently applying the brakes. I’ve chosen to sell a business I built over the past 25 years. The woman who bought it from me is definitely in the fast lane. I’m happy to let her pass me. I’ll slow down as I take this exit. I’m ready to explore the pace where I can fill my soul everyday and help ‘make memories’. It’s a new adventure.

As a mom of two girls, a little over a year apart, I have managed to be a hands-on mom (without a nanny, mind you!), a super do-it-all wife (including all the handy stuff around the house - GOT a drill for Xmas), coordinate massive amounts of playdates (which is stressful for a neat freak like me), begin a successful Etiquette/Protocol Consulting company teaching hundreds of private clients and Fortune 100 Corporations, having a weekly Q&A on ModernMom.com, and contributing my expertise to Martha Stewart Sirius Radio. And, to really fly down the fast lane, I am pitching a breakthough children’s animated series to some of the major networks…the 1st pitch is on Feb 12th…only two days after the 50 person surprise party I am throwing for my mother…if, of course, I don’t catch the flu that I’m nursing my daughter through….PHEW!

Candice Broom

I’m in my mid-twenties with a fresh MA degree, but I’m also a wife and a mother. I’m in the phase of life where everything is happening at once…pregnant with child #2 while gearing up to start my PhD. I’m looking forward to retiring.
I grew up in the American South, but the fast lane has taken me to China, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos and Belize.

Deidre Straughan

I live in Italy - home of the dolce vita? But I don’t sit in a villa in Tuscany and watch the olives grow (nor do most Italians). I’m Director of Customer Experience for TVBLOB, a software company in Milan. (2-hour commute from our home on Lake Como). I have a husband (Italian), teenage daughter, and a garden to look after. Convenience foods and takeout scarcely exist here – we cook. I run a busy blog/website, beginningwithi.com (thinking of turning it into a book).
